Work-At-Home Money = Scam or Not?

I recently received a really great offer in the mail for a work at home "job." The concept was that everyone pays two dollars to get in and a monthly fee. The way you make money is by sending out postcards (at your own expense) to get other people to join. Each time another person joins, you get paid.

I thought about sending off my two dollar start-up cost and started researching this company. It turns out the entire thing is legitimate and legal BUT no one ever makes more than about ten dollars on the whole thing.

I'll keep my two dollars and invest it elsewhere. Does anyone have any thoughts on work-at-home income and what good chances have you encountered, and what scams have you accidentally fallen for?

Love all your opinions,
Shelby Lynn

Candy, Carnivals, and killing your stomach.

It's so very true that too much candy will give you a belly ache. A major one.
Friday, March 20th was the kids carnival at Northome k-12 School. I was in charge of running the booth for my family. We had it to raise money for my brother Jeffery, who was invited to try-out for a spot on the AAU MN Comets basketball team. This is a great honor for him, but an expensive one. We raised only $73 dollars, but this is a good number because we made more than most of the booths.

However, we had about 3 bags of candy leftover after the carnival and well...what do you do with candy but eat it? So we did, and though I have a bigger sweet tooth than any in my family, I also get sick from sweets easier than anyone else.

So alas, my tummy is on rest today. No more candy. None. I must now go eat something with nutrients. Or pay for it later.

A little candy goes a long way - don't forget it.

Stupid Recession

What does it take for a gal to earn a buck? Really.

I haven't had a job in a few years. This has suited me fine for quite awhile. I honestly didn't need it. Jon has been able to support me fine until, well, now. He had a great job last summer and it lasted until he was laid off in November. We figured "Okay, there's money in the bank. He'll just find another job." Well, November turned into December turned into January almost turned into February before Jon found another job. Oh, he was looking, but he didn't find. I was looking too. I thought, maybe there's a job suited for me, I'll just work awhile.
Finally around mid-January word got to his grandpa that he didn't have work and lo' and behold, Grandpa says "Oh, ask your cousin Brent if he needs any help milking on his farm." Jon asks Brent, voila! he has a job.
This whole thing has caused a few problems.

1. During 'laid-off' period our priority with the money we had was to pay the bank back for the car loan. The loan is now paid off and not one payment late. The problem here is we had little money left over for other bills. Jon's cell phone bill had to go unpaid for a little while and BOOM! cell phone company decides to shut off his phone until he pays the bill AND they add a $200 service charge for service termination. Now wasn't that nice? We have paid in $400 to the company and we still owe about $400. Again I say, isn't that nice?

2. It wouldn't be so bad paying $400 for a cell phone bill except #2 problem. Jon's boss (his cousin Brent) refused to give Jon his entire paycheck. What he does is totals up the hours and multiplies it by Jon's hourly wages, gets the total amount, and rounds down to the nearest increment of 50 ($300, $350, $400...) Jon has told Brent he would like his full paycheck, but I think Brent has selective hearing. Now Brent has cheated Jon out of at approx. $60 so far. I know, sixty dollars may not seem like much, but that would really help pay for the gas to get to work and the extra groceries he has to buy because it's too far away to live at home during the work days.

3. Jon and I have no extra money between the two of us to have ANY fun. No dates, movies, or even a fun night in. This has really stressed our relationship. Not to go into details, but it's not very fun arguing about the money we don't have.

Jon has always been supportive of my not getting a job. He agreed I didn't need one and that I hate working. (I'm not lazy, I swear, I just hate answering to a boss, it makes me a very grouchy person) He's been hinting lately that it would be nice to pay off the last of the bills and have some extra money to..say..have some fun.

I've agreed and thus my job search. How long until I find work. Well, March will turn into April will turn into May will almost turn into June. So...around mid to late May I should have a decent job. I will not milk cows.

Meanwhile, support the cause. If you have extra money that has no purpose (yea, right) such as loose change, or savings account money that has no savings goal, give back. I suggest donating to charities that help people out in tough times. The Ronald McDonald House is a good place to start. They help families afford hotel rooms when they have to go to doctor appointments in an "away-from-home" city for very sick kids. McD house helped my parents and brother when my brother was diagnosed with a series of kidney/bladder infections/failures when he was young and needed surgery about every month in the St. Paul, Minn.

This is finally the end of my long post. Thank God blogger saves as I write because my computer shut down (I bumped the cord) just as I was righting "every month" in that last paragraph.

Hugs to all my readers. Don't forget, if this recession has you feeling down, you're not alone. Myself and hundreds of others are here.

March of Dimes

I've decided to sign up as an individual walker for the March of Dimes. The walk is on April 18th in Bemidji, MN and I'm hoping to raise at least $100 for the March of Dimes. I realize how important this organization is to many people so I decided to help support it.

To sponsor me, click the big March of Dimes banner at the top right of this page.

Thanks to All,

Update on Life

Though it's late (1 am) and I'm tired, I feel as if I should update on my extraordinarily eventful day.

Bank 3:20
Opened my own checking account (finally) and it only took 10 minutes. That was very great service. Got starter check kit and was on my way.

Dr. Appt: 4:30
Doctor just went over the ultrasound results quickly. We used the heartbeat monitor and detected baby's heartbeat at around 150 bpm. This is good. The appt went quick so that the nurses could close up and leave around 5:00. Made an appt for another month from now.

Went to Target (5:30ish) so I could bring my baby registry in to receive my free $20 Target gift card (awesome promotion I got through the mail) and receive my baby registry gift tote (another awesome promotion) which included diaper samples and loads of coupons. I recommend registering at Target so you can get the gift tote. It will come in very handy. I also got some new clothes because my old jeans are getting too tight. Went well except they wouldn't accept my starter check so Jon had to write the check. (To which I wrote an equivalent check to him because his account had no $$ in it)

Went to CUB Foods (sometime later) to get flowers and a helium balloon for grandma's birthday. THEY accepted my darn check because THEY are so darn nice.

Grandma's birthday party. (8:00) Went well, Mom made salmon for the meal so it was lucky I ate in town because I do NOT eat fish. Especially being pregnant. We had cake and ice cream. Hugs for Grandma and bye bye.

It's now very, very late and it's time for this Little Momma to go to bed because I must wake up in the morning to go to the bank and order more checks. (Yes, I'm stupid for not doing it today)

Everyone read Cakewrecks (link to the right) and laugh. I'm going to bed.

Hugs to my readers and all the other stressed Moms out there,
Shelby Lynn

Update on Baby

At our recent ultrasound, the technician gave us a due date of August 26, 2009. This means we are currently approx. 16 weeks pregnant. I made a cute ticker at Lilypie.com and I'll post it at the end of at least one post each week...lets say, Saturdays. I'll post it at the end of this one now to show you all what it looks like.

We wont know the sex of the baby until the next ultrasound in about a month or two, but regardless of the sex, we've (Jon and I) have decided that baby's colors (for the nursery, clothing, etc.) will be yellow and maybe a bit of green. I actually prefer yellow to pink/blue so this will go nicely.

My best pals have promised to throw me a baby shower in a few months and so I'm really looking forward to that. And diaper cakes, oh how I love those. I don't know why, but they are neat and practical, and also very adorable.

I have a doctor appointment tomorrow, just a check up (they did all the testing last time) to go over the ultrasound results. I'll post here then.

Hugs to all my readers,
Shelby Lynn

Baby!

So I haven't written a post in several months, but with good reason!

Shortly after the blood donating incident, I found out I was pregnant (hpt: 12-28-2009) and I have had so very little time to do much of anything lately.

I try to keep a written journal of daily events, but I find myself writing a weekly journal of weekly events because I have so little time between Dr. Appts, school, thinking, relaxing, and feeling sick. Morning sickness is a lie, it happens all day. And it doesn't actually go away after the 1st trimester, though it has lessened thankfully.

I would like to now turn this blog into a baby madness blog because I'm a tad baby crazy lately. I will keep the title as "Life's Pleasures and Pains" because well, isn't that really what a baby is? A pleasure and a thorough pain in the rear. (I mean this in the most loving way)

I will be posting my first official post shortly, tonight or hopefully tomorrow.

With love to my loyal readers,
Shelby Lynn
